CIUTADELLA MUSIC FESTIVAL

July 21, 2021

The first movement of the Sonata for trumpet and piano by the prolific American composer Eric Ewazen, with very modern harmonies and neat writing and which they played live together for the first time, served to open the recital, with a certain air of 'impressionism and rainy and nostalgic day. The impressionist style, now exploring the varied sonorities of the trumpet, continued with the "Rustiques" of the French Eugène Bozza, with vibrant and passionate moments by Mireia Farrés that gave shine to an effective composition that already began to show the dialogue between both instruments .

The beautiful and emblematic "Légende" by the Romanian Georges Enescu, loaded with technical difficulty and with a silent ending that you don't expect, was the precedent for pieces like "Psalm", one of the "Two portraits" of the composer born in the United States and still lives Joseph Turrin, of contemporary romantic style; and like "Nightsongs" by fellow American Richard Peaslee, with good doses of virtuosity and touches of jazz inspiration, giving entrance to the final part of the program and speeding up the rhythm, which is increasingly intense.

In the later "Peça" in havanera form by the French Maurice Ravel, technically challenging, but above all in the "Siete Canciones Populares Españolas" by Manuel de Falla from Gadí, well known in other instrumentations but very unique for trumpet and piano, it is where it was possible to grasp better the vocal role that sometimes the trumpet also plays. With a diction by Mireia Farrés that was as if you were listening to words and not notes, breathing with the words that the singers say in the original, as the trumpet player herself said during the concert and almost making it possible to understand the pieces without if there were letters The "Siete Canciones Populares Españolas", with catchy melodies, were truly brilliant.

How brilliant was also the interpretation, with a lot of feeling and an abundant piano accompaniment, of the last work planned in the program, "A song from the heart" by Eric Ewazen, forcing, in fact, the duo to give away more magic with two encores after the applause of the audience: a joyful original waltz for violin and piano and the iconic "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen, a classic that was worth listening to again and where, in the language of the trumpet, neither he needed the letter to understand all the words.
